Jean Françaix (1912-1997) was a French composer and pianist known for his joyful, expressive music. He gained early recognition, studying under Nadia Boulanger and Maurice Ravel, and quickly became a successful composer. Françaix composed over 200 works, including chamber music and film scores, but his music saw less performance after the 1970s due to his rejection of serialism. This Tema con Variazioni (1974) was written for a clarinet exam at the Paris Conservatoire. Composed for the A clarinet at Ulysse Delécluse's request, it features six variations and a cadenza based on the main theme. The piece, dedicated to Françaix's grandson Olivier, reflects a playful, mischievous child, showcasing Françaix's characteristic style. Introduction and performing notes in French and English by the clarinetist Rémi Lerner. New engraving.

Pierre-Octave Ferroud (1900–1936) described his music as “without superfluous ornament or flaws, a music that is sturdy, healthy, optimistic, a music that just works”. Claude Debussy's Syrinx (1913) started a fashion for pastoral scenes; it was echoed by Arthur Honegger's Danse de la chèvre around 1919, then by Ferroud's Trois Pièces, which had its première on 13 December 1922. The first movement, “Bergère captive” [Captive shepherdess], embodies the pastoral idea with a melody which uses the Locrian mode of B to A. The following movements, “Jade” and “Toan-Yan”, are imbued with another theme that was fashionable at the time: orientalism. Since Chinese poetry often refers to jade, and in particular to the jade flute, it is only natural that Ferroud should have made the titleh is own, giving it a local flavour through pentatonic scales, glissandi, appoggiaturas and repetitive rhythms. Historical introduction and notes on interpretation in French and English by the flutist Anne Cartel.

Paul Bonneau (1918–1995) was considered by all his contemporaries to be the leading composer of French light symphonic music: he collaborated on fifty full-length films in addition to numerous shorts as either composer or orchestrator and composed scores for ballets and operettas. He wrote a number of pieces for saxophone which are still regarded around the world as standard reference works. His Suite for alto saxophone and piano is structured in four movements which can be played independently, like miniatures that live in their own, separate universes. Written in the Neoclassical spirit typical of the mid 20th century, this work bears witness to a flourishing French saxophone school, with its typically classical sound at a time when jazz was sweeping its way acrossEurope.

A composer and conductor of genius, Eugène Bozza (1905–1991) left us several operas, ballets, large-scale symphonic and choral works, but his worldwide reputation is derived mainly from his many chamber works, written for various instrumental formations with a preference for wind instruments. Composed in 1954, Soir dans les montagnes is the companion piece to Jour dété à la montagne for flute quartet. Imbued with a certain serenity and outdoorsy freshness, it is reminiscent of many of Bozzas other works: for its “pastoral” title, for its character – sometimes calm, sometimes sprightly –, and for an elegant, transparent writing style enlivenedby striking rhythms and motifs.
