The Sonata for clarinet, viola, horn and piano, op. 37 was composed in 1920 (at the latest). The violist Michael Balling, a friend of Johanna Senfter, wrote to the composer about the work, which he had looked through: “I have just studied your Trio [!] Sonata as a real Sunday treat and congratulate you warmly on the beautiful, warm tone you have achieved. [...] The tone colour is excellent to my taste, and can perhaps be exploited even more by adding the low notes of the clarinet in some places [...] and also the high notes of the horn, and the high register on the A-string of the viola can also come into its own in some places. Most importantly, however, it seems to me that you should make the piano part a little less thick [...]” and he concludes his remarks humorously with the request: “So be gracious and kind to the poor hammered dulcimer players and make it a little easier for them.”

The Trio G major / E minor op. 103 by the Oppenheim composer and student Max Reger can be assigned to the composer's late work based on the opus number, even if no year of composition or premiere can be determined. The work for the unusual instrumentation of clarinet, horn and piano presented the editor Wolfgang Birtel with the challenge of developing an authentic musical text from the original manuscript, which was riddled with careless errors. Since no other sources for this work are available, the practical exchange with the Else Ensemble was a great benefit for Birtel. The current edition of this trio makes another attractive chamber music work by this late-romantic composer accessible.

Already in his early youth, Mozart made his first forays into the genre of the string quartet, the supreme discipline in chamber music. The three three-movement works K. 136–138, which he designated “Divertimento”, are dated “Salisburgo 1772” in the autograph, but were presumably conceived earlier while on a concert tour under the Italian sun. They do not yet display the “erudite” four-partwriting that Joseph Haydn was perfecting at the same time, but instead strike a cheerful, playful serenade tone with mostly song-like upper voice and accompanying lower voices.
The fact that Mozart designated the lowest voice not as “Violoncello” but as “Basso” and also used the plural “Viole” for the viola part suggests that he certainly had in mind more than one instrument on a part here. In this form for small string orchestra, the three so-called “Salzburg Divertimenti” are still perennial evergreens today. Edited by Mozart expert Wolf-Dieter Seiffert, this practice-oriented chamber orchestra edition offers a verified musical text on the basis of the autograph sources. – An edition for string quartet is also available.

Alfred Reed composed Five Dances for Five Clarinets in 1956 at the request of the LeBlanc instrument company to introduce the performance capabilities and tone of each instrument of the clarinet family. The five movements are based on musical styles from around the world: 1. Hoe-Down (E-flat Soprano Clarinet), 2. Sarabande (E-flat Alto Clarinet or Basset Horn in F), 3. Guaracha (Bass Clarinet), 4. Afro (E-flat Contra Alto or B-flat Contra Bass Clarinet), and 5. Hora (B-flat Clarinet). Previously, the score and parts for Five Dances for Five Clarinets were only available on a rental basis, and Reed had not included the composition in his own list of published works. Yasuhiro Murakami, author of an annotated list of Reeds works, created this edition based on Reed's manuscript.
This work may be performed by one soloist on five different clarinets, by five separate soloists, or a smaller number of the movements may be played by one or by multiple soloists. Each of the Five Dances is also published with piano accompaniments which are still in print. The detailed “Master Plan Lesson” written by Donald McCathren of LeBlanc for each movement are available for digital download.
