Resonant chimes and sonorous chorales lend a somber but inspiring hue to this work, written to memorialize a band director's passing while celebrating the legacy that all teachers leave for their students. As Hazo writes in the score's preface; “The more we give of ourselves, the more our lives resound.” (4:50)

Percy Fletcher was a well-known British composer in the early 1900s and was noted for his pioneering efforts for brass band (efforts that were later taken up by other composers, such as Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gordon Jacob). This exhilarating work is described by the composer as “a comedy overture” and has been adapted here for the modern symphonic band by Brant Karrick. (6:20)

Commissioned by the distinguished Northshore Concert Band under the direction of Mallory Thompson, Let the Amen Sound is based on Joachim Neander's seventeenth-century chorale Lobe den Herren, known in English as “Praise to the Lord.” The hymn tune is stated first by a solo flute accompanied by percussion and muted trumpets evoking the sound of liturgical bells. Three variations follow that represent important milestones common to human existence - the playful exuberance of childhood, the sentimental dance of youth, and the triumphant celebration of lives well lived. A dramatic and rewarding addition to the wind band repertoire. Dur: 7:00
Recorded live by the Northshore Concert Band – Mallory Thompson, conductor

The inspiration for Downtown Divertimento comes from my daily wanderings in Chelsea, in lower Manhattan. The day begins with a leisurely walk to Madison Square Park with our dog Alice. We visit the dog run where she meets up with other city canines. On the way back we have a moment of reflection looking at the nearby Flatiron Building, the striking triangular city landmark. I go for a run later in the day. My jogging shoes naturally head for The Highline, an abandoned railway viaduct that was transformed into a lushly landscaped National Park. I absorb the spectacular views of the Hudson River and the majestic New York skyline as if seeing them for the first time. Downtown Divertimento was commissioned by the Rocky Mountain Commissioning Project. The movements are: 1. Dog Play (at Madison Square Park), 2. Flatiron Reverie, 3. Hitting the Highline.

From Copland's program notes: “An emblem stands for something – it is a symbol. I called the work Emblems because it seemed to me to suggest musical states of being: noble or aspirational feelings, playful or spirited feelings. The exact nature of these emblematic sounds must be determined for himself by each listener.”

Originally composed in 1937, the overture contains a pulsating and driving rhythmic force which is balanced by the flowing secondary theme. As Hunsberger describes, “the orchestral colors are in a class of their own, ranging from overwhelming fortissimos to chamber effects to raucous splashes of wind and percussion energy.”
