Eja Mater is a prayer for comfort to all parents who have lost their own child, but also expresses love from parents to their children. Originally written for choir and orchestra as part of Kim André Arnesen 's Stabat Mater, this stand-alone version, adapted for a cappella choir, has a symphonic feel. This heartfelt and ethereal setting has a persistent flow throughout, with melodic lines effortlessly passing between voices. Breath marks and rests are carefully notated for this reason, and this also enables the piece to be sung by only eight voices, though it is equally appropriate for larger choirs accustomed to singing in eight parts.
