Canto 'E Liberta (Song of Freedom) is an invitation to free ourselves from hate and prejudice while learning how to co-exist with all our differences. The song is based on an Afro-Puerto Rican genre named Bomba. This music style was originated and developed by the enslaved people of Puerto Rico who worked in the sugar plantations during the Spanish colonial times. Through the years women had played an important role in Bomba and you would find them usually dancing, singing and/or playing the maracas. (The drumming was previously left for only men, but in the past 15 years, women are also drumming and soloing, which represents the open expression of women having a strong voice of culture, resistance and self-identity in society.)
