The classic wind octet consisted of pairs of oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns. In this Little Symphony, two flutes have been included to provide a wider range and more brilliant top to the ensemble. The first three movements are from the Fünf Klavierstücke (1818) and the fourth movement is from the piano 4-hand version of the Overture in Italian Style in C (1817). The music is gentle, good natured, and rich in the familiar Schubertian qualities of graceful melodic invention and harmonic elegance. (18:45)

The Dylan Thomas poem “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” was the motivation for this musical composition. While not a programmatic depiction of the poem, the work attempts to recreate the essence of the poem in sound. The opening motive, representative of the life force, permeates much of the work. The use of sound layers – in the form of polytonal hymns – calls to mind the struggles and persistence of the human spirit and its refusal to “go gentle.” A substantial and dramatic work for mature ensembles. Dur: 11:15 (Grade 5)

A setting of passages from the Book of Revelation, with particular reference to the angels who appear with seven trumpet blasts, heralding a series of apocalyptic scenes. Commissioned by Jeffrey Skidmore, director of Ex Cathedra, and first performed by them at Birmingham Town Hall in 2015. The composer states, “There is a vividness and strangeness in these dramatic texts, which are endlessly fascinating and disturbing. The instruments used here are based on the various instrumental types mentioned throughout scripture - trumpets, harp, bells, cymbals, tabor, rebec.” These are scored for mostly in their modern forms, but shofars (Jewish ritual temple trumpets) and early trumpets are also used. The choral writing shows a similar contrast between traditional and contemporary scoring, with polyphony and homophony alongside extended vocal techniques, including Sprechstimme. Leading choral director Paul Spicer comments, “This is an extremely dramatic work which draws the listener into the apocalyptic story line...The ending is cataclysmic.”

The model for this composition was Beethoven's Septet op. 20, whose Divertimento character and six-part layout were adopted by Schubert, although he merely expanded the instrumentation by adding a second violin. In a letter he numbered his octet amongst the chamber music works with which he desired to blaze a “path to the great symphony.” It can no longer be ascertained whether the composition was commissioned by Count Ferdinand Troyer, who had a musical salon in Vienna and played the clarinet. We only know that Schubert composed the work at the beginning of 1824, taking only a few weeks to do so and that it was shortly performed at Troyer's afterwards. Today it is one of the most popular larger chamber music works.
