Develop jazz solos using melodic fragments from traditional fiddle tunes. These etudes show how melodic cells can be used to create extended improvisations. In each example, fragments of a traditional fiddle tune (“Turkey in the Straw,” “Arkansas Traveler”) are developed over jazz standard chord progressions. Each etude is preceded by a short introduction, discussing the development techniques at work. The online audio tracks feature swinging interpretations of each etude, and provide play-along tracks so that you can practice each concept.

Henry Schradieck chose the modest designation “studies” for his exercises. Their musical substance, however, goes far beyond that of a study. They are character pieces which get their captivating musical expression particularly from the harmonic progression and expressive melodic lines while the rhythm remains relatively consistent to maximize the effect of practising. The pieces are basically caprices (capriccios) which disregard formal rules in an imaginative and playful manner.
Like the famous 24 Études Caprices by Jean Delphin Alard, the studies cover all major and minor scales of the circle of fifths. In addition to the original fingerings, this edition also contains alternative fingering variants which include both playing in the second position and modern change-of-position techniques like creeping and pivoting.
Each study is preceded by short explanations of the editor Benjamin Bergmann concerning the contents and objectives of each study as well as by practical technical information on the performance. This edition is published in the Essential Exercises study series which contains proven practical study works for instrumental lessons. MORE»

Garth Knox is one of the most prolific violists of his generation, and as a former member of the Arditti Quartet for years, he has developed his love of contemporary music. He now gives concerts and organizes workshops all over the world. Following his highly successful Viola Spaces, he has now released the Violin Spaces, concert etudes for violin, which bring advanced playing techniques to advanced players. The pieces - or “spaces” - give each of them a space for specific techniques, such as the flageolette, pizzicato technique (with 10 fingers!) Or glissando variants. The Violin Spaces are dedicated to the violinist Diamanda Dramm, who worked closely with the composer during the development of the pieces. MORE»
