Circles features 24 original character etudes by Phillip Keveren, representing all of the 12 major and minor keys. These brief solos range widely in emotion and each is absolutely delightful to play. The set was inspired by the calendar months from the viewpoint of someone living in the northern hemisphere (where Keveren grew up), therefore the C Major etude is also titled “New Beginnings” while F Major, the penultimate etude, is called “Sleigh Bells.” May be performed as a set, in selected keys, or individually.

“Some of Gershwin's finest inspirations have not as yet been either published or publicly performed. It is probable that the production of his twenty-four preludes ... will award him a still higher rank in the army of contemporary composers.” In 1925, an admirer thus heralded George Gershwin's ambitious project in Vanity Fair, namely to compose preludes in all keys as Bach and Chopin had done before. On 4 December of the following year, the composer publicly performed five of these pieces. However, the extremely busy darling of Broadway only published the famous three Preludes for Piano (1927) during his lifetime. We are now proud to present them for the first time in a state-of-the-art Urtext edition.

This extraordinary edition includes a selection of piano works by Chinese composers from the second half of the 20th century. They are marked by Western influences while also reflecting the multifaceted folk music of China. They range from short character pieces to sonatinas, from simple song arrangements to multi-movement cycles. These works are of medium difficulty and offer a representative cross-section of a musical cosmos that remains largely unknown in Europe. Predominantly pentatonic in character, these works unite the magic of Far Eastern music with the sound of the piano.
We were able to get the well-known pianist Jingxian (“Jane”) Xie from Shanghai to select these compositions, which she herself regularly performs in the concert hall. She not only provided the fingerings, but has also written a preface that offers a general overview of modern Chinese piano music and introductions to each of the individual pieces.

The epithet “English Suites” – as with the “French Suites” – did not originate with Bach himself. In contrast to the six intimate French Suites, Bach's English Suites adopt a grander tone, each one opening with a prelude in concertante style. Two of the sarabandes survive in additional versions that feature ornamentation by Bach himself; an impressive testimony to his intended virtuosic and opulent harpsichord style in these pieces.
Despite the lack of autograph sources, the musical text of these works has survived extraordinarily well and reliably thanks to several contemporary manuscript copies. For this revised Urtext edition Ullrich Scheideler has undertaken an exemplary investigation of authentic variants, especially in the ornamentation. All are documented here, and made directly accessible to the player in the musical text itself. This new edition also has another Bach specialist on board: Ekaterina Derzhavina, whose carefully-devised fingerings will guide players securely through the cosmos of Bach's English Suites.
