The cellist Sebastian Lee from Hamburg was not just the celebrated solo cellist of the Paris Opera, but also wrote numerous compositions for his instrument. In addition to today forgotten salon pieces and divertissements on then popular opera melodies, he also wrote many pedagogical works, some of which accompany every cellist to the present day. These include the 40 melodic and progressive etudes published in Paris in 1843 as op. 31. Hans Winterberg's Streichtrio from 1960 is one of the composer's most substantial chamber music works. On the one hand, he achieves a fascinating symbiosis of the most important tendencies of German-Austrian and Czech modernism in the first half of the 20th century; on the other, he takes a decisive step towards a tonal language in which the focus is no longer on harmonic-melodic complexity, but on the sensation of different tempo experiences occurring simultaneously. This path, which originated with Janácek,finally culminated in the works of the late 1960s, above all in Rhythmophonie for symphony orchestra, in which this compositional principle became the title. Winterberg, born in Prague in 1901 to a Jewish family that had lived in Prague for centuries, studied there with Alexander Zemlinsky and Alois Hába, among others. He survived the Shoah thanks to lucky coincidence and emigrated to Munich after the war, where he enjoyed a successful second career as a composer in the 1950s and 60s. The String Trio was recorded in 1962 by the members of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Angelika Rümann, Franz Schessl and Wilhelm Schneller in the Bavarian Radio studio. The Münchner Streichtrio played the world premiere coram publico in Esslingen in 1964.

This new revised and corrected performing edition of the complete four-act ballet Romeo and Juliet is based on the full score published in Moscow in 1961 in the series of Collected Works of Serge Prokofieff. In addition to the Piano Concerto No. 1 and the Suite for Viola and Piano, this unusually scored Concertino is one of the earliest works that Winterberg composed after moving from Prague to Munich in 1947. In that year, Fritz Rieger, his old fellow student in Zemlinsky's conducting class, had premiered Winterberg's First Symphony, written in Prague in 1934/35, in Mannheim – it was the most important performance of one of the composer's works to date, and Winterberg could not only hope a new beginning after “Zero Hour”, but also for the real start of a career that had been denied in Prague from 1939 due to persecution and imprisonment on account of his Jewish origins. In contrast to important symphonic works, three piano concertos and string quartets, which were premiered and broadcast in Munich from 1950, Winterberg's chamber music for wind instruments - among thiem the Concertino - remained unperformed and unpublished during the composer's lifetime. With its rhythmic splendor, its unshakeable “Élan vital” and the humorous play with the eccentric combination of instruments, the piece seems like a reminder of the lost world of Dadaist surrealism in Prague between the wars.
