Prokofiev's Second Violin Sonata was originally a work for flute and piano. Composed in 1943, the Flute Sonata op. 94 immediately aroused the interest of violinist David Oistrakh, who suggested a violin version to Prokofiev. The composer consented and, together with Oistrakh, reworked the solo part for violin. The Sonata was issued in this form in Moscow in 1946; in the USA, it became known through an edition edited by Joseph Szigeti. The editor of our new Urtext edition is the violinist and musicologist Viktoria Zora, who has researched and written about Prokofiev's violin sonatas for many years. She has examined all the original sources in Russian and international archives. Thus, for the first time it has been possible to make a source-critical edition of the sonata that eliminates the many errors and ambiguities of earlier editions. Franz Schubert's Piano Sonata op. 143 in a minor was composed in February 1823 following his large “Wanderer Fantasy.” With its formal coherence and mature originality, the A-minor Sonata initiated a new phase in Schubert's sonata oeuvre. The composition avoids any superficial virtuosity, but nevertheless places great technical demands on the performer. At the same time, the richness of color and sonority are triumphant to such an extent that the work is one of Schubert's most frequently performed sonatas. The autograph was available as the definitive source for Henle's revision of the Urtext edition; a contemporary copyist's manuscript and the posthumous first edition were consulted for the purpose of comparison.
In her preface, Schubert researcher Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl presents the current state of research. This new edition also contains fingerings by the well-known Schubert interpreter Martin Helmchen.

Every classically trained saxophonist knows and plays this work: with his Saxophone Quartet, composed in 1932, Alexander Glazunov established virtually out of nowhere a new genre and helped the then unusual chamber music setting with four saxophones in different registers to achieve a breakthrough. The first edition, however, only appeared over twenty years after Glazunovs death and exhibits numerous typographical errors and inaccuracies. Fortunately, one of the outstanding young saxophone ensembles of our time has taken up the work and made extraordinary source discoveries in the process. Besides the autograph short score from a St. Petersburg archive, two manuscript copies of the score by Glazunov's wife and by the legendary saxophonist Sigurd Raschèr, who personally visited Glazunov in Paris for this purpose, provide important information for the edition. Thus, this key work of classical saxophone literature can finally and for the first time be presented in Urtext quality.
