This mini-cycle of three songs for Voice and, in this instance, Guitar, are ranked among the greatest of Granadoss musical achievements. The blend of beautiful melody, formal integrity and control in the accompaniment creates a remarkable work. The songs set the poetry of Fernando Periquet, a contemporary Spanish writer, and generally concern the theme of romantic love. The texts are in Spanish, untranslated.Spanish composer and pianist Enrique Granados was active in the decades around the turn of the last century. Granadoss life and work were cut tragically short when the passenger ship on which he was sailing was bombed by a German U-boat in the English Channel. He is best known for his suite for Piano Goyescas, which has been arranged for other instruments, written in 1911, around the time that these songs were written.

Marimolin, commissioned by and dedicated to Nancy Zeltsman and Sharan Leventhal, is a work in three parts in the familiar “fast-slow-fast” format of a classical concerto. In fact, it is loosely based on one aspect of Stravinsky's Concerto in Ré (1946) for string orchestra in that the first movement, in triple meter, and the last movement, in duple meter, are written at the same metronome marking of = 126. The middle movement, slow and molto cantabile, is the centerpiece and focal point of the entire work. The “concerto” character is preserved in Marimolin not only by the timbral contrast between the marimba and the violin, but by the soloistic roles that each instrument is asked to perform. Consequently, the contrapuntal nature of the work is revealed and intensified. –Thomas Oboe Lee
